Wisdom teeth extraction or removal is a procedure for removing one or several wisdom teeth, which are usually one of the four adult teeth which are placed in the back corners of our mouth, either at the top, or at the bottom.
When a wisdom tooth does not have enough room to grow, this may cause pain and infections, and the necessity to have it removed immediately. The wisdom tooth extraction surgery should be done by an oral surgeon or a dentist.
In order to prevent any potential issues in
the long run, many dentists recommend having your wisdom teeth removed even
when they are not impacted.
The removal can take from a few to twenty
minutes. Sometimes it can take longer. And after the wisdom teeth are removed,
you may experience pain and discomfort. Moreover, there can be some mild
bruising visible.
Before the actual surgery, everything is
explained to you and you will be asked to apply your signature on a consent
form. After that, you are typically given a local anesthetic, in order to numb
the area around your wisdom teeth. There can be some risks associated with this
type of procedure, such as delayed healing, which usually happens if you smoke
in the recovery stage.
