What Is Oral Pathology Really All About?

Oral pathology is a borderline specialty between general medicine and dentistry which involves the diagnosis + treatment of diseases of the oral mucosa (cheeks, tongue, and palate).

Although the presence of many lesions in the oral cavity is often noticed by the patient, due to the rich sensitivity of the area, most often they are treated with indifference or even ignored. A specialist performing wisdom tooth extraction acknowledges that, in some situations, these lesions may be the signs of the onset of systemic diseases or have the potential for malignancy in the absence of proper specialized treatment.

It may be surprising, but there are actually about 300 diseases with noticeable symptoms in the oral cavity!

Go to the dentist regularly!

It is imperative to go to the dentist if:

·        you have ulcers in the oral mucosa

·        you have a herpes inside your mouth

·        you have candida-like secretions

·        you have canker sores

·        you have swollen gums, which is most likely caused by an infection

If patients notice discomfort or the presence of persistent changes in the oral mucosa, the first and most correct option is a visit to the dentist's office for a specialist consultation. This avoids self-information from sources that are not always accurate, as well as self-medication, which is often ineffective or even contraindicated.
